Kim Hudson: Red, White and BOOM demonstrates collaboration

The word is out. I know it’s only May but it is not too early to share the news that the Fourth of July Fireworks are back again for Salisbury.

Thanks to Mike Dunn, we will have an awesome fireworks display in a new location this year.

Red White and BOOM started three years ago when decided he was going to bring fireworks back to Salisbury.

Having no idea what all was involved Mike began the process of researching, planning and fundraising to make his wish a reality. After all, a community such as Salisbury should certainly have a Fourth of July celebration.

And this year the celebration just gets better. Last year’s site is not available since the old Bennett Middle School will be in the demolition process at that time so the fireworks will be ignited from the old Salisbury Mall site. Spectators can park in the Civic Center parking lot and surrounding areas.

But the real action will occur inside County Stadium where you won’t want to miss the fun.

Families can bring their lawn chairs into County Stadium for the best viewing seats. The gates will open at 6:30 and vendors will be set up selling food and treats.

There will be a bounce house, face painting, a clown, magician, juggler and balloon maker, and even a kazoo parade for the kiddos — a true community July Fourth celebration. Robinson’s Family of Businesses is the premier sponsor this year so be sure to thank them.

This event is such a success because of Mike’s efforts to bring everyone together to make it happen.

Support has come from the city of Salisbury, Wicomico County and the Board of Education plus businesses and individuals alike. Red White and BOOM is the perfect example of what true collaboration looks like.

We all have an opportunity to get involved here. Red White and BOOM is a nonprofit and the fireworks are funded through Mike’s fundraising efforts each year. That is one person who tirelessly volunteers his time to ask the businesses and people of Salisbury to support this event — all for the purpose of making our community a better place.

Red White and BOOM has its own Facebook page where you can keep up to date with all the details. And new this year is a Go Fund Me account where people like you and me can make a donation of ANY amount to help support the fireworks. I don’t know about you, but I’m willing to make a contribution to keep the fireworks coming back.

We are on a roll Salisbury. Great things are happening and the momentum is not stopping. Can you feel it?

Red White and BOOM is just another example of what happens when one person has the desire and drive to make things better. Thanks Mike!
