Ireton nixes mayor’s race, files for City Council

Passing on a contest with Jake Day, Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton filed has officially filed for a City Council.

Ireton filed today as a candidate for District 4, which represents central and northside neighborhoods of the city.

The two-term mayor previously served on the council in the 1990s. Day, the City Council president, is the only candidate for mayor thus far.

For weeks, Ireton has been saying he hadn’t decided about his political future. There was some speculation he would seek a higher Maryland office, but he chose to remain local and filed in plenty of time for the Aug. 18 deadline.

The election will be Nov. 3.
