Salisbury Festival returns this Saturday, Sunday

To the delight of locals, the Salisbury Festival – a longtime event that brought city residents together in a music-infused, upbeat carnival atmosphere — is back.

It’s been two or three years since the last one, Jamie Heater, director of Arts and Entertainment District for the city, said, and when she suggested its return, the idea was met with enthusiasm.

“I was tasked with creating some multi-purpose events. I took one look at the idea and I said, ‘This is the Salisbury Festival.’ A lot of people are glad it’s coming back. The (Salisbury Area) Chamber of Commerce is all-in. It takes a huge amount of effort and a huge amount of expense. It used to be in April but we always had so much rain. The Chamber said we’d have to change the date,” she said.

Change it they did, to June 2-4, this weekend.

The festival promises foods, a beer garden, local artists and crafters and carnival rides. Not only will there be food booths, but also food trucks, for a wider selection that will include hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, French fries and funnel cakes.

“We are concentrating on East Market Street this year. It will be all in one spot. The only areas that will be closed will be Lot 1 and part of Market Street to the parking garage,” Heater said.

Also new for 2017 is a full slate of entertainment, even on Sunday. “We’re going to stretch out the entertainment a little bit,” Heater said.

There is no admission charge. Hours are Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Carnival tickets will cost $2 each and $23 for a book of 20. Ride All Day wristbands, for Sunday only, will cost $18. For information call 410-774-6145.

The festival opening is from 6 to 6:15 p.m. Entertainment on Friday will be the Bone Daddys at 6:15 p.m., Tops Cut Off DJ Team at 7:30 and Funk Shue from 7:45 to 9 p.m.

On Saturday, entertainment will be by Amp Studios from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., The Jump Up from 1 to 2 p.m., The Larks from 2 to 4 p.m., Meredith & Mayers with Becca Doughty from 4 to 5:30 p.m., Chris and Grayson English from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Brothers of the Brush Beard Contest at 7 p.m. and Tops Off DJ Team until 8 p.m.

On Sunday, performances will be by Tops Cut Off DJ Team from noon to 2 p.m., Ode & the Time Node Trio from 2 to 3 p.m. and On the Edge from 3 to 5 p.m.
