Zen Monkeys, Red Letter Day to play this 1st Saturday

It’s a two-for-one special this Independence Day Weekend in Downtown Salisbury when Zen Monkeys and Red Letter Day take the 1st Saturday stage.

Sponsored by First Shore Federal and Value Carpet One, 1st Saturday will be held on July 2, 2016 from 4 to 7 p.m. on the steps of the Government Office Building.

Also performing during the intermission, from 5:30 to 6 p.m., is Kevin Sandow, who will spin fire poi.

“It’s going to be a great holiday weekend in the Downtown and in Salisbury, in general,” said Sarah Rayne, co-chair of 1st Saturday. “Start your weekend at 1st Saturday on July 2, then check out the first City Park Bandstand concert on July 3, and wrap things up with a phenomenal fireworks show on July 4 at Red, White & Boom. It’s pretty amazing that there is so much to do in Salisbury during this holiday weekend.”

The Zen Monkeys take pride in blurring the lines between musical genres. From funk to rock to bluegrass to country, this trio is guaranteed not to disappoint. Suzanna Mallow leads the group with powerful vocals and solid songwriting, while Angie Travers lends goose bump-inducing harmonies with a sultry, soulful voice. The Zen Monkeys succeed in creating a truly unique sound that can surely satisfy every breed of music lover.

Red Letter Day is a name synonymous with 20 years of independently produced music, melding multi-instrumental talents and prolific songwriting. Suzanna Mallow and Andrea Jones started Red Letter Day and began writing music together in 1990 and started their own record company, Antwinnie Music Inc. They have four CD’s available with worldwide distribution.

Poi involves swinging tethered weights through a variety of rhythmical and geometric patterns. Poi can be made from various materials with different handles, weights, and effects, such as fire.

The Zen Monkeys will perform from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Kevin Sandow will perform from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Red Letter Day will perform from 6 to 7 p.m.
