Groups to hold Monday forum on executive vote

Salisbury’s top two business advocacy groups will host an unprecedented public meeting Monday morning on the steps of the Government Office Building to address a governmental leadership fight in Wicomico County.

Dr. Rene Desmarais.

The Greater Salisbury Committee and the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce will join other community organizations in an open-air forum to discuss last week’s Wicomico County Council selection of a new County Executive.

The event begins at 10 a.m. in the plaza area along North Division Street, just south of Route 50.

GSC leaders and others are expected to share thoughts on the ongoing selection process to choose the next Wicomico County Executive, including ways the public might still become involved in the decision-making process.

Dr. Rene Desmarais was selected in a 4-3 vote on Thursday to succeed the late Bob Culver in the executive’s post. If one of the four council members who voted to appoint the Salisbury cardiologist reverses their support, the appointment could possibly be reconsidered at the council’s Sep. 1 meeting.

“This discussion will NOT be about the three candidates who were finalists for the County Executive,” the GSC said in a statement.

“This is NOT a rally for or against any candidate. We applaud all three applicants for their willingness to throw their hat in the ring, and GSC looks forward to working with the next County Executive to help in any way we can to move the county forward,” the statement said.
