Matt Holloway, Cannon claim County Council at-large seats

Matt Holloway won re-election on Tuesday and John Cannon regained a seat he gave up four years ago as Wicomico voters elected two Republicans as their at-large County Council members.John Cannon

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Holloway was the top vote-getter with 39 percent. Cannon was second with 36 percent.

There were only three candidates in the race, as Democrats only put forth one candidate, Salisbury City Councilwoman Laura Mitchell. She finished a distant third, with 26 percent of the vote.

Cannon served as council president until he gave up his seat to run for the House of Delegates four years ago. Part of a politically connected family with deep roots in Salisbury, Cannon is a businessman and Realtor.

Matt_HollowayHolloway, himself a well-connected Wicomico native, is often cited as part of the new, younger leadership occupying seats of power in the city and county. He helps run his family’s sod-growing business near Hebron.

Mitchell, a Certified Public Accountant, will continue serving in her City Council seat, where she is council vice president.

While other members of the county serve within specific districts, the at-large members serve the entire county population.
